The reflective strip is a small detail that makes all the difference.
In France, it is not only recommended: it is mandatory on all approved motorcycle helmets.
But you still need to know where to place it and how to apply it correctly to stay within the rules and ensure your visibility on the road.
Everything you need to know to properly equip your motorcycle helmet without making mistakes is in this article.
Why put a reflective strip on your motorcycle helmet?
Reflective strips are used to improve visibility, especially at night or in low light. They reflect the light from headlights, allowing other users to spot a motorcyclist's presence more quickly.
But it's not just a matter of safety, it's also a legal requirement.
In France, the Highway Code requires that any approved helmet sold or used must be equipped with four reflective strips:
- One at the front
- One at the back
-
One on each side
Without these elements, the risk is a fine of up to 135 € in case of a check.
Note: the strips provided with our helmets are white and conform to approval. Some black strips sold elsewhere are not always certified: it is therefore strongly recommended to use only approved strips (compliant with regulatory requirements) to stay within the law and ensure optimal visibility.
Where to place reflective strips on a motorcycle helmet?
The regulatory locations are specific:
- Front: on the front part, without covering the visor or vents.
- Back: in the center or slightly at the top of the shell.
-
Sides: on each side, symmetrically.
Each strip must measure at least 18 cm² and be visible from any horizontal angle of 180°.
All our helmets come with a separate set of reflective strips.

How to correctly apply reflective strips?
1. Clean the surface
Ensure the shell is clean, dry, and free of dust. A slightly damp soft cloth is enough to remove any grease or wax marks.
2. Choose the location
Before sticking, position the strips to check their alignment and ensure they do not obstruct the vents or decorative elements.
3. Paste with caution
Gradually remove the protective film while pressing from the center to the edges to avoid air bubbles. A rigid card (like a credit card) can help smooth it out.
4. Check symmetry
Both sides must be perfectly aligned. The visor or the upper line of the helmet can serve as visual markers.
5. Let dry
After installation, wait a few hours before exposing the helmet to rain or strong heat to ensure good adhesion.
How to change the strips?
If the strips are damaged or yellowed, they can be replaced at any time.
To remove the reflective strips, gently peel them off by pulling gradually. If necessary, you can slightly warm the area from a distance, without excessive heat, to facilitate removal.
Then, clean any residue with a microfiber cloth, water, and mild soap. Once the surface is clean and dry, you can apply new strips.
All helmets SHARK come with a complete kit of reflective strips provided in the box upon purchase.
To go even further in visibility

For riders seeking enhanced visibility, we offer the models Skwal i3 and Skwal i3 Jet.
These innovative helmets integrate a LED lighting system at the front and rear, ensuring active visibility, day and night.
The Skwal i3 is also equipped with an intelligent accelerometer that automatically activates the rear lights during braking phases, without any external sensor.
This technology offers 360° visibility, a real asset for the safety of the rider.
